Book Club – There There

September 13 at 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Join us for our Monthly Book Club, where book lovers come together to discuss a wide range of literary genres, from contemporary fiction to timeless classics. Each month, we select a new book to dive into and explore its themes, characters, and plot twists in a friendly and welcoming environment. Whether you’re a seasoned reader or just looking to start a new hobby, our book club offers a great opportunity to share your thoughts, discover new authors, and meet fellow literature enthusiasts.

This month we’ll be discussing the book There There by Tommy Orange. This novel follows twelve characters from Native communities all traveling to the Big Oakland Powwow, all connected to one another in ways they may not yet realize. Among them is Jacquie Red Feather, newly sober and trying to make it back to the family she left behind. Dene Oxendene, pulling his life together after his uncle’s death and working at the powwow to honor his memory. Fourteen-year-old Orvil, coming to perform traditional dance for the very first time. Together, this chorus of voices tells of the plight of the urban Native American–grappling with a complex and painful history, with an inheritance of beauty and spirituality, with communion and sacrifice and heroism.

Books will be available for checkout at the library. We can’t wait to see you there!
